Wise Observations by Mildred

Educated or Smart

I’m pretty much with Mildred on this.  I think people would be amazed if they really knew some of the things that people get grant money to study.  When it comes to some of the so-called discoveries I am in the “Who Cares?” department.  I don’t want to know that certain things in meat are bad for me…I want to know how to cook it so that it has the best flavor.  I don’t want to know the migrating habits of blackbirds…I just want them to stop roosting over my black car.  I get tired of hearing that the things they said were bad for you and nagged you to give up are now being found to have “health benefits”.

Thinking is a lot like that mudhole.  Sometimes we think someone is really deep when all they have done is muddied the waters so we can’t see what’s there.

I would like for you to leave a comment with some of the wasteful studies that you have heard of.

The most wasteful study in my history has gone down in legislation. It has been colloquially named “The Chicken S–t Study”. My state legislature granted $3M to study “the horticultural benefits of organic chicken waste product” (chicken s–t). Apparently, the state did not discover fertilizer until the late ’80s.
    (Let the jokes commence.)

I like the food ones. Every few months they seem to find new evidence of what is good for you, which is the complete opposite of what the previous study showed. And then a new study disproves that one. . . That’s why I stick with chocolate and wine gums.

The food thing kinda irritates me, too. I’m hearing all over the place how bad sugar is, yet a while back, on a fairly ‘reputable’ news source (I’m not positive I remember the source for sure, so I won’t mention where I think I saw it) I noticed a story tagged, ‘Possible Health Benefits of LSD’ (or something along those lines). Yeah, do that, please – start taxing sugar so I can’t afford to buy a COLA, and then suggest replacing it with LSD. Really? Really?
Sorry – that was a bit more of a rant than I intended.

I read an article once that said that a lot of science & medical researchers falsify their research findings purely to keep their funding coming in.

Don’t have any specifics, but am definitely with you and Mildred on this one! And, of course, with Binky, also!

Most men say. I think I can jump that mud hole right there. Then they say the most famous saying of all. Hey y’all watch this.

  7. Maddie Cochere Says:

I haven’t paid a lot of attention to studies that are in the news. I hear about them, but don’t seem to retain the information. But I do know there is terrible waste for all manner of ridiculous things.

I think algebra was a terrible study in my day.

    • Bo Lumpkin Says:

I agree on the algebra.  We were always trying to figure out the value of x and it just wasn’t valuable to me at all.
